With WHITEBOOK 01 – 'IT'S A CIRCLE', photographer and graffiti artist Mark Grokenberger presents an impressive documentation of graffiti culture in New York. Between 2019 and 2025, he and friends from all over Europe traveled to the birthplace of modern train writing ten times to witness the creation of wholetrains and wholecars up close and capture them photographically. The result is a visually stunning book that not only presents impressive images but also functions as a personal diary and cultural essay.
Grokenberger tells the story from the perspective of a writer embarking on a journey to the roots of graffiti – a search for historical parallels, creative development and personal expression. The atmospheric photographs and accompanying texts capture the intensity, dedication and spirit of a subculture that has developed into a worldwide phenomenon over the last 50 years. More than just a coffee-table book, Whitebook 01 is a reflection on public art, the dynamics of community, and the eternal circularity of graffiti as an art form.
